We could spend days, months and years speaking of the history of Greece, whose western civilization, place of epic battles, land of the spartans, trojans, cretans, and legends such as the minotaur were born. Greece is a country where the olympic games began and where the athletic body came about. Greece was one of the most important civilizations that ever existed, it is best known because it's culture was present in 3 continents as well as for being the origin of the first civilizations that settled along the Agean Sea.
Around 800 years b.c. the first civilizations were formed in this area establshing themselves as cities or polis. In the V century b.c. the invasion of the Persians with one of the most historic battles in the world against the Spartans. There came the legend of the Battle of the Termopilas in which 300 spartans and a few hundred allies held the Persians captive for a week. Afterwards they won the battle.
It's culture was the base of the helenistic civilization that succeeded to the Alexander Magnus government. Afterwards it was conquered by the Romans, regardless the Greek culture lived on to the Midieval greece who finally got the biggest Empire ever known, and who's capital Constantinople lasted over 10 centuries from the V to the XV.
Today, Greece is a democratic Republic since Greece gained independence from the Ottaman Empire in 1821. |
